How to change the speed limit on your fat tire ebike – M5 display

This week’s adventure was almost a carbon copy of my ride from last week. On Sunday I hit the trails with my son, and we did 17 miles starting at the southwest end of Poway heading west towards I-15, and then through Penasquitos canyon to the waterfall, and back again. It was a great ride. It started really warm, but had just gotten dark by the time we got back to where we started, so was just starting to get cold at that point. This was number 6 in the 52in25 series.

I love seeing these bike repair stands dotted around the trails

I ran into an issue last week with one of my kids’ ebikes that really had me stumped for some time. I finally figured out the problem, and seeing as it was such a pain I’m sharing the info here for you to use if you need it.

What was the issue? The ebike just suddenly started maxing out at a new speed limit! A lot lower than the bike is capable of. In fact it was at half speed which was driving my kid nuts! My guess is that someone at his school messed with the settings – punks!

This hack is for ebikes that are using the M5 LCD display. This one. This particular bike is an OUXI V8.

The hack that I knew of was what I tried first. By pressing the plus and minus buttons simultaneously, the bike enters a mode where you can change certain settings. Max speed is one of them, which is P0-8 on the control panel. Navigate to it by pressing the power button until you reach it. On certain bikes there are P0 numbers and P1 numbers. The M5 has both sets and on this display P1-8 cannot be changed (at least from what I can tell), but P0- 8 can. But there’s a catch. You need to know this super secret code to be able to change the value. It can be set from 1-50, with 50 being the max speed. This does not equate to 50mph or 50kph. It’s just the max speed that the bike will go. On my kids bike, that’s 30mph, but because P0-8 was set to 25, the bike would top out at 15mph.

Ok, so what’s the code you might ask. With the screen on P0-8 press and hold the minus button. The screen will change allowing you to enter a code. From there enter the following code with the plus/minus buttons: 8252. This will allow you to now update the speed limit using the +/- keys. Set it to the speed you desire, and that’s it, you’re done!

My other kid has a Ridstar bike. This one is a little easier. There is only one set of P numbers. On that control panel, it’s very similar. Hold + and – together for a second or two. Navigate to P8, and change the setting from 1 – 100, with 100 being the max. On this bike I set it much lower than 100, because I don’t want my son hitting the higher speeds.

Thanks for reading.
