I forgot to bring my knee brace – ouch!!

I had a really nice ~2.5 mile hike today in Poway. I started from Silverset park, and hiked to the top of Twin Peaks, a local hiking trail that’s steep and rocky, and has amazing views of much of San Diego from the top. It was lucky number 13 in the 52in25 series. I’ll share some pictures below.

Normally when I do this hike, or anything with a steep downhill section, I’ll plan ahead and bring my Cambivo knee straps with me. I won’t wear them on the way up, as I don’t usually experience any pain then, but coming down is another thing altogether. I’m definitely feeling the effects throughout my body of hitting my mid 40’s.

Well, silly me, I didn’t bring them today, and boy did it hurt coming down. I have an uneasy pain, mostly in my left knee, that is hard to describe, but feels something like a bone on bone type pain. It’s fine at rest, and going up hill, but I definitely need that support coming down.

I’ve tried a variety of knee braces. Everything from the expensive, clunky kinds, to something simple that’s sort of like a two-holed tight sock, and a few others in between. Mostly my issue has been that it’s too hot and sweaty, especially behind the knee when too much skin is covered. Hiking can be an intensive workout, so I usually go for light clothing, and free moving limbs.

The Cambivo braces are lightweight, easy to take on and off, and don’t cause me to sweat any more than usual. Having a Velcro strap is perfect for taking them off when I don’t need them, unlike some of the other styles where you need to sit and take hiking boots off first. They provide just enough support to make downhill hiking more pleasant. I just have to remember to bring them!

As promised, here’s some pictures from the trail today.
