Six and a half mile hike to Eagle Rock (PCT) wearing the wrong insoles!

I got in two amazing hikes during the past weekend. On Saturday I managed to get the whole family out to the waterfall at Penasquitos Canyon. We clocked up about 8 miles that day, with the highlight being the waterfall (albeit small) at the turning point. We don’t get much rain here in San Diego, so any sort of free flowing water is a treat. Scroll below for some awesome pictures!

On Sunday it was just me. I made the long drive (~45 miles) to Warner Springs where the Eagle Rock trailhead via the PCT is located. It’s a beautiful hike, and one I try to do at least once a year before the temperatures creep up. Even though it’s shaded for quite a bit of it, hiking in 90 degree weather is never good!

After Saturday’s adventure, my feet were sore in the arch area. I had bought a couple of pairs of insoles to try a few weeks ago, and hadn’t tried them out yet, so I decided to put the first to the test on Sunday. What a mistake that was!

I wore them for the entire hike – all 6.5 miles to Eagle Rock and back to the trailhead. I noticed almost immediately that my stride was different. It took me a while to get used to, but I figured that was normal given the insole had a high arch to it. Looking back, I really should’ve only worn them for a mile or two. As I sit here now, 3 days later, my legs are still in pain. I’ve had calf, thigh, foot and hamstring pain since Sunday night. It’s easing, and it will go away, but man was it painful!

I’m not going to name the insoles, because I think it’s my own fault for wearing them for the best part of 3 hours. I will say though, they were a very well-reviewed product on Amazon. I definitely should’ve done a much shorter test walk. But, when I am fully recovered, most likely by this weekend, I will be trying out the second pair of insoles I bought – Dr. Scholl’s Pain Relief Orthotic Insoles. Wish me luck!

And now it’s picture time 🙂

I love this place! Running water, majestic oak trees, cattle (including bulls) running around, shade, wide open plains, and that rock formation! Just wow! This was hike number 17 in the 52in25 series.

Hike 16 was at Penasquitos Canyon. Here are some photos!

And number 15 was a bike ride through Poway headed towards Penasquitos Canyon. It had rained recently, and the bridges were washed away. This required a partial undress (shoes and socks) to pass through the water.
